For the third year in a row, LUMA and the American Red Cross Sign a Partnership Agreement

Supported by the non-profit organization, the agreement benefits the communities most in need

(San Juan, October 7, 2024) – LUMA and the American Red Cross Puerto Rico Chapter signed a collaborative agreement enabling the company to continue its educational efforts and serve the most vulnerable communities during weather disasters and emergencies. This agreement is part of LUMA’s commitment to educate customers about electrical safety and the associated risks.

“We are very excited, as it reaffirms our commitment to the Red Cross. This agreement allows us to reinforce education and contribute to the well-being of our children, youth, and the entire community. Furthermore, we encourage volunteer work among our employees, who will be an important part of this effort,” said José Pérez Vélez, Director of External Affairs of LUMA.

Throughout the year, LUMA has supported various programs through the non-profit organization, including:

  • Prepare with Pedro and Pillowcase Project – This initiative aims to prepare children from third to fifth grade to respond in case of emergencies, fires, natural disasters, and other stressful situations.  Last year, our employees visited schools, reaching 3,109 students.
  • Sound the Alarm – A program that provides free smoke alarm installations in homes across different communities. With the help of our volunteers, we installed 1,989 alarms in the past year.
  • Disaster Relief – It aids those affected by home fires, floods, storms, hurricanes, and other disasters. Last year, thanks to donations, we supported 530 families affected by these events.

“We thank LUMA for its continued support as we mark three years of partnership. This collaborative agreement enables us to advance two key areas of our mission in Puerto Rico: offering disaster preparedness programs to children in schools and colleges and providing critical assistance to those affected by disasters across the island,” said Lee Vanessa Feliciano, Regional Executive of the American Red Cross Puerto Rico Chapter.

The non-profit organization offers a comprehensive range of disaster relief and recovery services, including financial assistance, mental health support, healthcare, spiritual care, and referrals. They also respond to emergencies, such as house fires, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, landslides, and other emergencies. On average, the Red Cross in Puerto Rico attends to 20 house fires per month. For more information, visit www.lumapr.com or follow our social media on Facebook, www.facebook.com/lumapuertorico .
