For the third consecutive year, LUMA and the Department of Education renew collaborative agreement

The agreement enables 5th-grade public school students to receive educational talks on electrical safety

San Juan, Puerto Rico – June 17, 2025 – LUMA and the Puerto Rico Department of Education have renewed their collaborative agreement for the third consecutive year to continue offering educational workshops on electrical safety to 5th-grade students in Puerto Rico’s public schools. This collaborative effort has already impacted more than 35,000 students over the past two years, with the primary goal of raising awareness among children about the risks associated with electricity and promoting safe practices in their homes and communities.

The educational sessions cover topics such as identifying energized power lines, safety guidelines inside and outside the home, and what number to call in case of an emergency, among others.

The renewal of this agreement represents an important step forward for our students, as it equips them with the tools needed to respond appropriately in emergency situations. This collaboration is part of LUMA’s commitment to educating the public on electrical safety and related risks.

“The safety and well-being of our students is an absolute priority. This agreement with LUMA allows us to bring vital preventive education to our schools—education that can make a difference in times of emergency. Continuing this alliance is a responsible and necessary step toward strengthening our culture of safety starting in the classroom,” said Ramos Parés, Secretary of the Puerto Rico Department of Education.

“LUMA is committed to fostering a culture of safety from an early age. Educating our children on electrical safety is fundamental to building a safer, more resilient energy future. We are very pleased to continue this partnership with the Department of Education, which has already had a significant impact on thousands of students and will allow us to keep contributing to the energy transformation of our island,” said José A. Pérez Vélez, Chief Executive Officer of LUMA.

This renewal reinforces our commitment to communities and supports our pillars of education and youth well-being, economic development and recovery, and energy stewardship.
