Aerial Inspection and Vegetation Management Plan Advances on Major Transmission Lines

More than 400,000 customers benefit from inspections and upgrades to critical transmission lines

Bayamón, Puerto Rico – July 30, 2025 – As part of its ongoing inspection plan, LUMA’s transmission team has completed aerial inspections of key 230 kV transmission lines that are essential to maintaining the stability of Puerto Rico’s electric system.

Among the lines inspected were line 50200, which runs from the Manatí Transmission Center to Costa Sur Power Plant, and line 50300, which connects Aguirre to Costa Sur. These 230 kV lines form a vital link between the northern and southern regions of Puerto Rico and serve more than 400,000 customers.

“This effort is part of a preventive inspection program conducted every three months. These 230 kV transmission lines, along with 115 kV lines, are inspected more than once a year to identify conditions that may pose a risk to the system. Once potential deficiencies are identified, they are categorized by criticality level and scheduled for corrective action,” said Hamilton Lugo, LUMA’s Director of Transmission, who has more than 28 years of experience in Puerto Rico’s electric system.

As part of this work, vegetation management was conducted on critical structures along line 50200 located in remote areas with no road access. Due to the complexity of the terrain, helicopter transport was required to safely and efficiently carry out the work. Additionally, on both lines, 50300 and 50200, essential insulation components and fittings were replaced on several towers. These components had been in operation for over 30 years.

“This type of work highlights why it is crucial to prioritize investment in the electric system and ensure that necessary funds are available in the appropriate accounts. Only by doing so can we continue to strengthen an infrastructure that has been neglected for decades,” added Lugo.
