Net Metering Steps

If you are interested in connecting your renewable energy sources, please follow these steps.

2. APPLICATION

Customer Applies to LUMA for Net Metering through the DG Portal by clicking here.

  1. Create an account on the Distributed Generation Portal
  2. Use your LUMA Service Account ID to create the account
  3. Attach all completed forms with your application through the portal

3. LUMA APPLICATION REVIEW

LUMA will review application to ensure the required documents and information are included

  • LUMA will contact the client through the portal if any information is missing, unclear or incorrect.

4. LUMA TECHNICAL VALIDATION

LUMA will complete a technical validation of the application

  1. Field assessments may be required based on the size of the Distributed Generation Connection
  2. If a supplementary study is needed, payment of the study is done by customer through portal.
  3. If the case is above 25 kW or Transmission connected, additional activities or documentation may be required.

5. DG CONNECTION APPROVAL

  • LUMA will contact the client through the DG portal to advise the connection is approved within 30 days of customer application

6. SIGN NET METERING AGREEMENTS AND INSURANCE

  1. Customer must sign the net metering agreement on the Distributed Generation portal
  2. Customer must obtain Public Liability Insurance for Distributed Generation capacity greater than 300kW

7. BI-DIRECTIONAL METER INSTALLATION

Once the request has passed technical validation, the site must have a bi-directional meter to accurately measure the energy the customer is producing.

  1. Some meters already have bi-directional measurement capabilities already
  2. If a bi-directional meter is not already installed, LUMAwill send a technician to change the meter

8. TARIFF CHANGE

  1. Once a bi-directional meter is installed, LUMA Billing Services team will update the Service Agreement to include a tariff change that will be represented on the following month’s invoice to the customer.
  2. A Service agreement will be issued from the portal.

9. ANNUAL NET METER CREDIT

  • If a cutomer site produces more energy than it requires, a credit will be applied to the service agreement once per year in June for the previous 12 months.
