LUMA, IN COORDINATION WITH PREPA, CONTINUES EFFORT TO REENERGIZE AND RESTORE POWER

RESTORATION UPDATE: 376,000 CUSTOMERS RESTORED AS OF 4:30 AM

San Juan, Puerto Rico, September 21, 2022 – In response to the devasting impacts of Hurricane Fiona on the electric system, LUMA and its partners continued extensive damage assessment, reenergization of critical generation facilities, and restoration efforts across Puerto Rico. As of 4:30 am, following the reenergization of Cambalache 2 and 3, LUMA has now restored power to 376,000 customers.

“All across Puerto Rico, damage assessment, reenergization, and restoration efforts continue as LUMA, in coordination with PREPA, works around the clock to overcome the damages of Hurricane Fiona. We are continuing critical initial aerial inspections of the island’s transmission system, clearing debris, processing repairs and restoring power to customers as quickly and safely as possible. While some areas of Puerto Rico have suffered extensive damage, our LUMA teams are determined to make progress and will not stop until every customer in Puerto Rico is restored,” said LUMA Public Safety Manager, Abner Gómez.

Restoration Update

Among the major restoration actions and accomplishments that have been completed by LUMA

and our partners since Tuesday evening include the following:

Tuesday, September 20

  • Conducted outreach to all 78 municipalities and mayors’ offices
  • Deployed 5 damage assessment and engineering contractors to assist with damage assessment efforts across the island
  • 11:00 PM – Energized 52 critical PRASA facilities
  • 11:00 PM – Completed aerial initial aerial inspections of 230 kV and 115 kV power lines 

Wednesday, September 21

  • 12:00 AM – Brought online an additional 100 MW of generation from Cambalache 2 and 3 generation units
  • 12:30 AM – Restored power for 313,000 customers
  • 12:30 AM – Restored power to the Hospital Regional in Arecibo and the PRASA Superacueducto in San Juan
  • 2:00 AM – Completed repairs to the Auguirre substation
  • 3:00 AM – Brought online an additional 50MW of generation from Mayaguez 2
  • 3:00 AM – Connected 230kV power lines from Mayaguez to the San Juan powerplant
  • 3:00 AM – Restored power for 330,000 customers
  • 4:30 AM – Restored power for 376,000 customers

Restoration Totals To-Date

  • 25% of Customers Restored
  • 39% of 230 kV power lines restored
  • 34% of 115 kV power lines restored
  • 17% of 38 kV power lines restored
  • 571 miles of transmission power lines restored
  • 46 hospitals restored

Scope of Hurricane Fiona Response

Presently, over 2,000 utility workers across more than 660 crews are working in the field all across Puerto Rico to restore and reenergize Puerto Rico’s electric system.
