Bayamón, PR – April 13, 2026 – LUMA continues strengthening the electric service in Bayamón through the energization of a section of a transmission line that serves residential communities, businesses, and the Universidad Central de Bayamón. After more than a decade without the completion of this work by the previous administration, this project is now underway as part of LUMA’s focus on addressing critical infrastructure and improving electric service for more than 4,000 customers in the area.
As part of the work, crews are transferring cables to new structures that meet current requirements, replacing previous poles, and reinforcing the system’s capacity following the most recent industry standards.
“These efforts allow us to modernize infrastructure that had gone more than a decade without being completed, which will strengthen system reliability and improve service for customers,” said Engineer Hamilton Lugo, director of transmission lines, who has more than 29 years of experience in the electric system.
The transmission line spans approximately 27,000 feet and includes 223 transmission and distribution poles. Currently, crews are working on nine of these poles, including areas with difficult access that require specialized equipment to complete the work safely.
Crews are also working on transmission poles where there are beehives, following safety protocols that include specialized equipment to protect both personnel and the environment. In addition, corrective points identified through advanced technology such as thermal imaging cameras are being addressed, which helps anticipate potential failures and reduce outages.
“We are prioritizing the completion of critical projects that strengthen the redundancy of the electric system and improve service continuity for our customers,” explained Engineer Belmaries Torres, LUMA’s regional distribution line manager for the Bayamón region.
