This work will take place from approximately 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Caguas, PR – February 24, 2026 – LUMA will carry out work this coming Saturday, February 28, at the Villa del Rey substation in Caguas as part of the substation maintenance plan to improve the electrical system in the Caguas region. This work will help improve service quality for approximately 7,300 customers, including schools, hospitals, and residents in the area. For safety reasons and due to system limitations, some customers may experience service interruptions between approximately 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
This maintenance work at the substation aims to minimize system interruptions and correct voltage issues that customers in the surrounding communities may be experiencing. LUMA personnel will work on the distribution bus, replacing and upgrading two of the switches, commonly known as “machetes,” to improve the substation’s protection capacity and prevent major outages.
On this occasion, work will focus on two switches that were identified with corrective points and required immediate attention to stabilize the system in the area.
“We are addressing several corrective points identified in the distribution bus that, if not handled promptly, could create an imbalance in the system, affecting the voltage received by customers. We carry out this large-scale maintenance work mostly during the first months of the year since it allows us to interrupt the substation fully to complete these improvements without compromising the country’s network,” said José M. Hernández Carrion, Substation Supervisor for the Caguas region.
As part of the preparation for this work, LUMA worked closely with the municipality, hospitals, and other critical-load customers to inform them about these system improvements so they could notify their communities and prepare accordingly. Likewise, all work will be carried out following the highest industry standards and strictly adhering to safety protocols.
