Projects Advance in the Electrical system in the Mayagüez Region to Improve Customer Service

Work Strengthens System Reliability, Improves Voltage and Reduces Outages in Western Communities

Mayagüez, Puerto Rico – February 17, 2026 – As part of efforts to strengthen the electric system in the western region, LUMA reported the completion and progress of multiple projects in the Mayagüez region, focused on improving service stability, correcting voltage problems, and increasing grid resilience for the direct benefit of customers.

During the past months, critical works were carried out on lines, feeders and substations that allow a more robust and flexible system:

Increased system resiliency and backup

  • Repair of a segment of the 38 kV line (line 6000), which serves as a backup for the T BONE substation in Aguadilla, helping to maintain service or restore it faster if a breakdown occurs.
  • Replaced key equipment that allows electricity to be moved remotely between transmission lines 6000 and 2800 that run through the town of Aguadilla. This helps that, if a failure occurs, the service can be restored faster without the need to send personnel to the site.
  • A new power line was put into operation in Añasco, which helps to better distribute the load and allows future improvements to the system.

Voltage Upgrades for Communities and Essential Services

  • Voltage corrections in Aguada, Aguadilla, San Germán, Mayagüez, Moca, Lares, San Sebastián, Rincón, Cabo Rojo and Isabela through hot spot repair, load balancing and equipment replacement. This will help reduce service interruptions.
  • Work on the Quebrada Dam in Lares related to voltage fluctuations that for more than five years forced the Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA) to operate with emergency generators.
  • Improvements in the Pozas de San Sebastián neighborhood to address the voltage problem. About 34 transformers were replaced and the load was transferred to a substation with a higher capacity. This allows for a more stable service that is prepared for current and future demand.

New equipment and increased capacity

  • Replacement of a damaged transformer in the Aguada substation with one of greater capacity, which provides greater stability to the system.
  • Replacement of two 115 kV breakers at the San Sebastián TC substation to strengthen the transmission network.

Regional impact on numbers

As part of this comprehensive effort in the Mayagüez region, the following progress has been made:

  • 1,918 poles replaced
  • 230 reclosers installed
  • 231 hot spots repaired
  • 2,373 protection points replaced
  • 582 fault indicators installed on primary lines
  • 225 switches installed

“Each of these projects has a direct impact on the daily lives of our customers. They translate into more stable and reliable electric service, fewer interruptions and faster restoration when events occur, as well as better voltage quality for homes, businesses and essential services. In addition, these works allow us to have a stronger and more prepared system to respond to emergencies and the future needs of the communities,” said Carlos Muñiz Lasalle, district manager of Distribution Lines of the Mayagüez region.

“Our commitment is to continue investing and working hand in hand with municipalities and communities, especially in those areas that have historically faced greater reliability challenges, to continue strengthening the electricity system throughout the island,” he said.
