Your safety is our priority

We are working to restore service as quickly as possible in the affected municipalities. In the meantime, stay informed through our social media channels and follow our recommendations: report outages using the Mi LUMA app and, for your safety, avoid approaching downed power lines, as they may be energized.

LUMA Celebrates Graduation of Substation and Transmission Line Specialists to Strengthen the Electric Grid

Five new professionals join the 64 graduates already contributing to Puerto Rico’s energy transformation, marking another step toward building a more reliable and resilient grid.

San Juan, Puerto Rico, January 29, 2026 – The LUMA Apprenticeship Program today celebrated two graduation ceremonies representing a significant milestone in the transformation of Puerto Rico’s electric system. Five specialists successfully completed intensive programs in critical areas, including substations and transmission lines, reinforcing grid operations and modernization efforts.

Recognized Graduates:

·       Substation Specialists:

o   Francisco IV Rodríguez

o   Luis Berríos

o   Francisco Pantoja

·       Line Workers:

o   Abimael Morales

o   Francis Burgos

With these graduations, LUMA has trained 64 professionals, an essential part of the workforce driving Puerto Rico’s energy transformation.

Currently, LUMA has 247 active apprentices, all Puerto Rico residents, enrolled in specialized programs in:

·       Line Work

·       Underground Work

·       Substations

·       Telecommunications

Upon completing their training, approximately 3.5 years later, students graduate with a solid, promising career at LUMA as Journeyman Linemen, the highest field worker rank recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). Their education is based on global industry best practices. These programs empower a diverse, highly skilled workforce to rebuild Puerto Rico’s electric system.

“These programs reflect LUMA’s commitment to technical training and creating opportunities for a diverse workforce. Among the active apprentices are 19 women, 8 veterans, and employees from PREPA, representing the next generation of professionals who will transform the energy industry on the island,” said Alejandro González, Vice President of Distribution Lines.

Diversity and Leadership:

At LUMA, 28% of the workforce is women, including 133 in key leadership positions and 175 in field roles such as low-voltage technicians, supervisors, regional managers, and more. This exceeds the national average, where less than 20% of the utility workforce is women, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Professional development is not limited to field apprentices. LUMA offers various apprenticeship programs that allow employees to gain hands-on experience and valuable skills in the energy sector.

“At LUMA, we firmly believe that professional development is an ongoing commitment that goes beyond the early stages of a career. Each graduation represents a step toward a more modern, safe, and resilient grid. Investing in our people means investing in Puerto Rico’s energy future. Our diverse apprenticeship programs provide employees with opportunities to gain practical experience and key skills in the energy sector. We are proud to welcome students from across the island, including Vieques and Culebra, as well as women and young people committed to contributing to Puerto Rico’s transformation,” González added.

Since its inception, the LUMA Apprenticeship Program has become a leader in technical training for the electric industry. By 2026, approximately 50 new participants are expected to graduate, ensuring the continuity of professional development on the island.
