LUMA activates its annual preventive plan in Old San Juan ahead of the San Sebastián Street Festival

The plan is part of a collaborative effort with municipal resources and other agencies to strengthen the electrical system and the response plan during the event

San Juan, PR –  January 14,  2026 – As part of its commitment to responsible planning and ongoing preparation, LUMA has reinforced proactive work and activated its annual preparedness plan in Old San Juan prior to the San Sebastian Street Festivities.

This effort includes a comprehensive plan that is executed every year and includes coordination meetings and collaborative work with the different municipal components, with the aim of strengthening the reliability of the electrical system and supporting the safe and orderly development of the event. Thus, the company dedicated to the transmission and distribution of the electrical system reaffirms its commitment to serve Puerto Rico during the San Sebastián Street Festivities 2026, which will be held from January 15 to 18 in Old San Juan. The objective is to ensure that attendees enjoy this cultural event without preventable interruptions in electricity service and with the greatest possible safety.

In preparation for the festivities, the LUMA team, throughout the year and in view of the Holidays, has carried out different proactive works or planned improvements in the electrical system of Old San Juan that support the stability and redundancy of the system. Among the works carried out are:

  • Work on the underground system to repair the transmission line that serves substations in Old San Juan, optimizing the reliability of the system.
  •  Repair of feeders located near the Tapia Theater, reinforcing the stability of the service in areas of high demand.
  • Interventions in nearby substations to guarantee redundancy and operational safety.
  • Maintenance and construction team work, including pole replacement and inspection of essential components.

In addition, LUMA’s internal group has held logistics and coordination meetings with municipal entities to specifically address the needs of these days.

“The electrical system in Old San Juan is complex due to its age and historical value, which requires careful planning given the fragility of the system. Our team has worked hard to ensure that everything is ready for these holidays, which are an essential part of our culture,” said Alejandro González, Vice President of Distribution Operations.

As part of the response plan, LUMA will have:

  • Operations groups of substations and underground of San Juan, assigned to attend to any situation in the area of the event.
  • Brigades strategically located at key points in Old San Juan, ready to act quickly and safely.
  • Teams from Bayamón and Toa Baja activated to provide support in Cataño, ensuring full coverage in critical areas.
  • Coordination with local authorities, including the Municipality of San Juan and the Police Bureau, to ensure an agile response to any eventuality.

Recommendations for attendees:

  • Stay away from the work our brigades do during the event.
  • Never touch the PM transformers (gray or green boxes that regulate the underground electrical system); They are dangerous equipment.
  • Report any situation or breakdown through Mi LUMA web, the mobile app, or by calling 1-844-888-5862 (LUMA).
