This improvement reinforces this substation, which is key because it connects generation with a large part of the country’s electricity system
Guayanilla, Puerto Rico – November 20, 2025 – LUMA has completed the repair of three breakers affected by Hurricane Maria at the Costa Sur substation, a critical facility because it serves as a connection point between some generating plants and the transmission system that supplies much of Puerto Rico’s electricity demand.
The works included replacing important parts that allow these pieces of equipment to open and close properly, and cleaning and conditioning the special oil they use to operate safely.
As part of the rehabilitation process, complete maintenance, cleaning, and functional testing were performed to ensure reliable operation. The internal mechanisms were also repaired and valves, motors and compressors of the pneumatic system that controls its operation were replaced.
“This effort is part of our commitment to the transformation of the electricity system. Every step we take to restore and modernize critical infrastructure like Costa Sur’s represents greater stability and resilience for all customers in Puerto Rico,” said Miguel Pagán, substation supervisor in the Ponce region.
These works are part of a maintenance plan focused on the stabilization of substations and transmission lines. For this reason, it is necessary to have the funds available in the accounts assigned to the maintenance of the transmission and distribution system, to ensure the continuity and development of the work. The availability of these resources is essential for LUMA to continue executing projects that strengthen the electric grid and improve service for all Puerto Ricans.
With these improvements, LUMA continues to advance its mission to provide a more reliable, safe, and modern electric service for all Puerto Ricans.
