7 vehicles and 14 LUMA experts were mobilized for work that had not been done 7 years ago.
Culebra, Puerto Rico – November 17, 2025 – As part of its commitment to the reliability of the electric system, LUMA completed a series of strategic works at the Culebra substation with the aim of strengthening service for all sectors of the island municipality.
The work lasted for five days, from Wednesday, November 12 to Sunday, November 16, reflecting the technical complexity of the work and the importance of carrying it out safely and efficiently. These interventions made it possible to attend to critical components of the system and ensure its optimal operation in the long term.
One of the most significant works was the complete replacement of the oil of the main transformer of the substation located on Escudero Street on the island of Culebra, a measure that helps to extend the useful life of the equipment and reduce the risk of future failures. This action was part of a proactive maintenance strategy designed to prevent outages and improve the stability of the electrical system.
During the period of the works, the electrical service was provided by emergency generators, with logistical support from Genera PR, which allowed most of the areas to be kept in service while the work was completed.
These improvements directly benefited residential and commercial customers distributed throughout the island municipality, including the urban area of Culebra, Flamenco, Playa Sardinas, Fulladoza, La Romana, Alturas de Zoni, Villa Muñeco, Villa Flamenco, Playa Clara, Punta Viento Estates, Costa Bonita Resort and areas near the municipal cemetery, among others.
In addition, special measures were implemented to support critical cargo customers, including the health clinic, aegis, shelters, fire and police stations, PRASA pumps, treatment plant, desalination plant, grocery store, mayor’s office, gas station, airport and PREPA’s technical facility in Culebra.
The work was completed using funds allocated to the operation and maintenance of the transmission and distribution system, which are essential to continue developing projects that strengthen the electrical infrastructure and ensure a more reliable service for all residents of Culebra.
