San Juan, Puerto Rico, November 9, 2021 –LUMA is shocked, bewildered and deeply concerned regarding the case initiated by Representative Luis Raúl Torres, which is undoubtedly motivated by the politics and interests of groups that oppose the electrical transformation that has begun, and that Puerto Rico desperately needs. The actions are aimed at undermining LUMA’s image and credibility in a broader attempt to impede the transformation of the electricity system.  This decision puts Puerto Rico’s electricity customers last.

Since March of this year, LUMA has been subject to multiple requests for information from the Legislature. To date, as part of these requests, LUMA has produced to the Legislature of Puerto Rico and the Court of First Instance more than 5,000 thousand pages of the documentation and information requested.

LUMA is firmly opposed to the illegitimate use of the legislative power of investigation to slow and impede the transformation of Puerto Rico’s electricity system, with the dire consequences that it entails for the well-being of the citizens of PR. The transformation of the electrical system was clearly set out in bi-partisan legislation contained in Act 120-2018 for the benefit of all the people of Puerto Rico.  The unending attempts by Representative Luis Raul Torres Cruz to slow or stop the transformation and benefit himself, UTIER and the few that are aligned with them cannot and should not occur in a modern democracy without the appropriate checks and balances.

This result goes beyond the intentional damage to LUMA but is also directed to the transformation of the electrical system, which will undoubtedly have an irreversible damaging effect on the development and strengthening of the economy and the quality of life for all Puerto Rico.

LUMA will continue to fight for its rights, the rights of its employees and the right to focus on the transformation of the electricity system for all its customers.
