The New Cohort of Line Workers Debuts Before their Graduation

LUMA’s 14 trainees test their skills in real-world electrical industry skills as part of their final preparation before graduation

Canóvanas, PR – September 24, 2026 – LUMA today held the 2026 Power Line Worker Program Rodeo (ULP), an iconic and characteristic industry event that highlights the preparation and development of the program’s apprentices. This group represents the ninth edition of the ULP, marking a continued advance in the training of new power line workers for Puerto Rico. In total, 14 trainees participated in the rodeo, including a female student, who was also selected as Class President.

“We are very proud to be able to train highly trained professionals, because their work is essential to continue improving the electric system and our communities,” said Janisse Quiñones, CEO of LUMA. “The rodeo demonstrates the discipline, dedication and skills developed by these apprentices, who are about to graduate and become a fundamental part of the workforce that keeps Puerto Rico going.”

The Rodeo allows trainees to publicly demonstrate the skills they developed during their 13 weeks of training at LUMA College. Through four core competencies—disc replacement, crosspad replacement, ascent relay, and rescue—students executed tasks that replicate real operations in the field, applying strict safety protocols and demonstrating speed, precision, coordination, and technical mastery. In addition, the event included a family recreational activity that promotes the support and integration of their loved ones in this training process.

These activities strengthen essential skills for their future work, such as decision-making under pressure, teamwork, leadership, use of specialized tools and rescue and safety techniques at height. Competing in front of peers, family members, instructors, and supervisors also strengthens the confidence and emotional preparation of trainees to respond to real situations in the electrical system.

The 14 participants of the ULP 2601 Program thus complete the final stage of their training and prepare to formally graduate, marking the beginning of a new professional stage in the country’s energy industry.
