Mayagüez is one of the districts that demonstrates sustained improvements in reliability, according to recent data reported to the Energy Bureau
Mayagüez, PR – August 25, 2026 – LUMA announced that on Wednesday, August 26, it will carry out planned work at the Once de Agosto Substation, in Mayagüez, to replace important equipment and continue strengthening the electric system that serves more than 11,000 customers in the region. The work will take place from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
To perform these jobs safely, a scheduled outage of approximately 16 hours will be necessary. During that period, the brigades will work at the transformer’s connection point, where they will replace equipment that has reached the end of its useful life and make other improvements aimed at reducing vulnerabilities and increasing the reliability of the service.
The works will benefit the infrastructure that serves the urban area of Mayagüez, as well as hospitals, industrial facilities, shops and residential communities. By making multiple upgrades during a single scheduled outage, LUMA seeks to complete as much work as possible and reduce the need for future outages to service this equipment. This planned improvement comes at a key time for the region: according to data reported by LUMA to the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB), Mayagüez is one of the districts that has shown consecutive improvements in the average frequency of interruptions (SAIFI) between fiscal years 2024 and 2026, reflecting the positive impact of similar investments in the area. In addition, the district is among nine that recorded reductions in the frequency of distribution outages during fiscal year 2026, evidence of sustained progress in service reliability.
“These types of planned improvements allow us to continue to increase service reliability in Mayagüez and serve equipment that, if it fails unexpectedly, could cause prolonged outages and affect thousands of customers,” said Luis Bonilla, director of LUMA. “The combination of strategic investments and preventive maintenance is key to continue reducing outages and strengthening the resilience of the electric system.”
The improvements will strengthen the electrical infrastructure that serves Mayagüez’s communities, neighborhoods, businesses and essential facilities, including the Judicial Center, hospitals, universities and industries. LUMA shared with the municipal authorities and community coordination teams the details of the sectors that will be included in the scheduled outage, to support the notification to customers.
LUMA reiterated that these scheduled upgrades are necessary to continue moving toward a more reliable and resilient electric grid, and urged area customers to take preparedness steps during the planned outage window.
