The company continues strengthening the grid and enhancing its response during the dry season and extreme heat conditions
San Juan, Puerto Rico – July 2, 2026 – Following several wildfires that have recently impacted critical electric infrastructure due to high temperatures, drought, and the dry conditions affecting the island, LUMA continues to strengthen its mitigation, modernization, and emergency response efforts to protect the electric grid and minimize the impact of these events on customer service.
These conditions have already created operational challenges for protecting the electric grid. In recent days, LUMA crews responded to incidents in Sabana Grande and Ciales, where wildfires affected transmission infrastructure, requiring replacement work and the activation of coordinated emergency response protocols with public safety agencies.
As part of these ongoing efforts, Distribution crews have replaced poles, insulators and protective fuse covers in areas with greater wildfire exposure. These projects are part of LUMA’s wildfire mitigation initiatives, designed to strengthen infrastructure in locations where vegetation, terrain, and weather conditions increase the system’s vulnerability.
In addition to these replacements, crews have accelerated vegetation management activities and corrected field findings that could increase wildfire risk. These efforts help create greater separation between electric infrastructure and potential ignition sources, reducing the likelihood that a wildfire will impact power lines or other critical equipment.
Alongside these preventive measures, LUMA has strengthened the preparedness of its workforce to respond quickly and safely to wildfire-related emergencies. The company’s Aviation team recently completed an advanced aerial and ground operations training program. As part of the training, participants enhanced their skills using the Bambi Bucket system, which can release up to 144 gallons of water and is specifically designed to suppress fires near critical electric infrastructure in coordination with the Puerto Rico Fire Department. These efforts further strengthen LUMA’s ability to protect transmission towers, power lines, and other essential infrastructure during emergency situations.
“Current conditions require a combination of prevention, continuous monitoring, and operational readiness,” said Jesús López, LUMA’s Southwest Distribution Lines Director. “Our focus is on mitigating risks before they impact critical electric infrastructure and ensuring our crews are fully prepared to respond whenever needed.”
LUMA will continue monitoring weather conditions, reinforcing critical areas, and implementing additional measures to protect the transmission and distribution system as the risk of wildfires continues to increase during Puerto Rico’s dry and extreme heat season.
