As Genera continued to assess the root cause of the July 16 event and ensure it is safe to energize the generator, they requested LUMA’s support to perform tests and repairs on their equipment for which LUMA agreed. Work performed included testing and replacing three defective surge arresters in the section of the substation adjacent to Unit 6 at Costa Sur. All work was completed safely and swiftly on Saturday.

As preventive measures, given the complexity and criticality of the work, our equipment flew over and inspected the 230 kV transmission lines, moved substation components and coordinated with external contractors before starting the work safely, minimizing the risk to the system.

Thanks to the close coordination between the LUMA and Genera PR teams, all work was completed as planned and in the established timeline while strictly following safety measures, industry technical standards and all necessary actions to mitigate risks. The relevant government agencies were informed and agreed with the joint decision to execute the work in tandem.

With this example we demonstrate, once again, that coordination and collaboration between the government, the generators and the operators are essential to continue to stabilize the electric grid and offer a safe and reliable service for our customers.
