The work benefited customers in the El 26 sector and required performing nearly 90% of the tasks using ladders due to limited vehicle access
Comerío, Puerto Rico – September 30, 2026 – LUMA today completed significant improvements to the electric system serving customers in the El 26 sector of the Palomas Abajo neighborhood in Comerío. The work presented a significant operational challenge due to the community’s unique access conditions. Improvements included the installation of a new transformer, the replacement of deteriorated secondary lines and connections, and the replacement of out-of-service streetlights, with the goal of addressing recurring voltage issues and improving the stability and reliability of electric service in the area.
Because the homes are in an elevated area with limited access for vehicles and utility trucks, approximately 90% of the work had to be performed using ladders. Crews transported personnel, tools, and materials through areas that specialized vehicles could not reach, adding to the complexity of the work.
“This is an example of the effort our teams make to bring improvements to communities where access conditions make the work significantly more complex. Our goal was to comprehensively address the issues that have affected these families over time and leave them with a more stable and reliable electric system,” said Luis Alicea, LUMA’s Metering and Low Voltage Supervisor.
The improvements addressed complaints related to voltage fluctuations that had affected residents in the sector, particularly during peak electricity-use hours in the afternoon. The work focused on correcting the identified conditions and providing a long-term solution that will help improve the stability and quality of electric service for families in the community.
As part of the work, crews installed a new transformer, replaced deteriorated secondary lines and several secondary connections serving customers in the area. They also removed meters from abandoned properties and replaced streetlights that had remained out of service since Hurricane Maria.
The work in Palomas Abajo is part of LUMA’s ongoing efforts in communities across Puerto Rico to address specific electric infrastructure conditions and carry out improvements that help provide customers with safer, more stable, and more reliable electric service.
