LUMA Began Phase 1 of a Modernization Project to Stabilize Voltage and Strengthen the Reliability of Electric Service in the Islote Community

The work marked the beginning of a month-long project that will replace critical infrastructure and address voltage issues reported by the community

Arecibo, PR – September 30, 2026 – LUMA reported that today it completed phase 1 of a modernization project aimed at correcting the voltage problems that have affected the Islote Community, in Arecibo. This phase is part of a scheduled effort that will continue for about a month to reinforce the electrical infrastructure on Transmission Line 6900, an essential corridor for service in the area.

“We know that the Islote Community has faced significant voltage challenges aggravated by salt content in the air and accelerated wear and tear that affects structures in coastal areas,” said Francisco Guerra, LUMA’s regional manager of Arecibo Distribution Lines. “Over the past few years, Islote has seen great residential and commercial development, but the existing electrical infrastructure had not grown at the same rate to meet that demand. With this first phase of improvements, we are correcting those gaps and building a stronger, more reliable system that is prepared to support the growth of the community.”

The project contemplates, in its entirety, the replacement of seven poles, the upgrade of 15 conductor sections to a more robust gauge, the installation of voltage regulators and the management of critical vegetation. These actions seek to stabilize the voltage, reduce fluctuations and increase the resilience of the electrical system that serves homes and businesses in Islote.

These improvements are essential to address the voltage fluctuations that the community has repeatedly reported. With the reinforcement of infrastructure and the increase in transmission capacity, the area now has a more stable base for the daily operation of homes and businesses.

LUMA reiterated its commitment to complete the rest of the work included in this phase and to continue implementing structural improvements that raise the quality and reliability of the electric service in the region.
