The work will allow future PRASA interventions to be carried out without interrupting electric service for residents of the area
San Juan, PR – July 2, 2026 – LUMA will carry out scheduled work on the 38 kV 3100 transmission line that supplies electricity to the Carraízo dam, which will consist of the installation and replacement of several essential components that are located within the most important drinking water reserve in the metropolitan area. These works will coincide with internal works of the Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA) that require the de-energized area and will allow critical improvements to the electrical infrastructure to be advanced and protect the continuity of service for the surrounding communities.
LUMA’s work will begin this Tuesday, July 7, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and includes the replacement of an inoperative ACB, the replacement of a wooden pole that belongs to the System Stabilization Plan established by the Energy Bureau, the installation of a new pole that will allow the power to be sectionalized and the replacement of insulation and other essential components of the network. These improvements will reinforce the stability of the system and, in turn, will allow future PRASA work to be carried out without affecting the electrical service of the communities that feed this substation.
“We recognize that we work with essential services and that the customer must always be at the center of our decisions. This coordination with PRASA allows us to execute improvements that strengthen the system while supporting their operational needs without duplicating disruptions to communities,” said Vice President of Transmission, Aviation and Substations, Hendzon Martinez.
For its part, PRASA will carry out internal work on the dam. The agency highlighted the value of this joint planning, noting that modernizing electrical infrastructure will also allow them to execute future improvements more efficiently and with less impact.
“Coordination with LUMA allows us to execute critical work at our facilities to strengthen our operations. The work we will be doing is fundamental, since it will allow us to carry out necessary improvements to strengthen the reliability of the water service received by the more than 180,000 customers served by the Carraízo Dam and the Sergio Cuevas Filter Plant systems. These are works that had been lagging behind for years and are of great importance to the Authority.
Teamwork with LUMA is essential to complete these improvements, since we will also be carrying out interventions in the electrical system that feeds our facilities in Carraízo,” said engineer Luis González Delgado, executive president of PRASA.
In preparation for the scheduled work, the excavation necessary for the installation of the new pole will begin on Monday, July 6, LUMA reiterates its commitment to the modernization of the network, continuity of service and interagency collaboration for the benefit of the communities that depend on these essential infrastructures.
