The company has already completed 40% of the project, strengthening the reliability of the service for thousands of customers before the peak of the hurricane season
Arecibo, PR – August 5, 2026 – LUMA reported today that it continues to advance at an accelerated pace in a broad vegetation clearing and management project along the line that runs parallel to PR-2, from Arecibo to Dorado, as part of its preventive efforts to protect the stability of the electric system during the period of greatest hurricane activity. This line operates at a voltage of 38 kV and constitutes critical infrastructure for the region.
The project encompasses approximately 50 miles of infrastructure. Of these, 20 have already been intervened by LUMA’s vegetation management brigades, made up of eight work teams and 22 specialized employees. These works directly impact around 10 substations in seven towns and partially benefit about 25 distribution feeders, since part of them run on the same structures. The brigades are removing or clearing all incompatible vegetation within the right-of-way, reducing contact risks and strengthening the reliability of the system.
This preventative effort is designed to reduce breakdowns associated with accelerated vegetation growth, a recurring factor in service interruptions in the area. The intervention directly benefits thousands of residential, commercial and industrial customers who depend on the continuity of electricity service in this section.
“LUMA is prioritizing the execution of immediate vegetation management needs to benefit the reliability of the service. We are focusing our resources on the areas where these interventions have the greatest impact to reduce interruptions and strengthen the electrical system,” said Daniel Colón, Vegetation Manager.
This project between Arecibo and Dorado, he said, is an example of that commitment. “By intervening critical infrastructure before the busiest period of the hurricane season, we strengthen the resilience of the grid and help offer a more reliable service for thousands of customers,” Colón said.
As part of the best practices of the arboriculture industry, LUMA implements strict safety protocols, specialized management and proper disposal of vegetative waste to ensure that the works are carried out safely, efficiently and with the least possible impact on the communities.
